This historic reorganization of 25 central labor councils into 5 area labor federations will greatly increase the ability of the labor movement to be successful in organizing and political action by consolidating our strength and resources throughout the state. The five area labor federations stretch from the lower Hudson Valley west to Buffalo. Area labor federation governing boards will stress inclusion of affiliates and sectors and the advancement of diversity. Each ALF board will be charged with hiring staff and developing program priorities. They will each coordinate, oversee and fund the work of the labor movement in their jurisdiction.
Central Labor Councils that will remain in their current capacity are: New York City, Long Island, Westchester-Putnam, Northeast, Jefferson/Lewis and Central New York.
The recommendations presented at the Convocation were the result of literally hundreds of discussions with labor leaders, affiliates and central labor councils across the state. The discussions took the form of face-to-face meetings, survey mailings, correspondence and conference calls.
