Legislative Alert – Let’s Honor Memorial Day With Our Actions

[td_text_with_title custom_title=”President’s Message”]Let’s Honor Memorial Day With Our Actions

This Monday we honor our fallen heroes across the nation and state. There is not enough thanks that we can give to the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice and to the families they left behind. It is with deep honor, respect and gratitude that I ask everyone in the labor movement to pause and reflect on this sacrifice.

Each year, Memorial Day marks the beginning of the end of the legislative session and the flurry of activity that comes with it. I hope everyone is able to enjoy some time off this weekend before the end of session process begins and that everyone has a safe and healthy holiday. This is also an opportunity to help veterans who have survived and those currently serving in the military. That is one of the best ways we can honor the men and women who gave their lives for our freedom.

I encourage everyone in the labor movement and in government to support initiatives like the Veterans Buyback bill described in this alert, as the end of session approaches.

On behalf of the New York State AFL-CIO, we all look forward to making the lives of our men and women in the military better and I join with all of you in pausing and remembering those who gave their lives so that we could all have a better life ourselves.

( A. 6974-A Paulin/S. 4714-A Larkin)

This legislation would expand the current veteran retirement buyback by removing limitations on the periods of time during which military service was rendered for purposes of determining eligibility. The bill also removes the limitations that the applicant served in the theatre of operations during the period of conflict.

This important bill recognizes the value of all veterans’ service to our country and would allow them to purchase up to three years of retirement credit for time spent in military service. Time spent in the military defending our nation is the ultimate public service and should be calculated with all other public service.[/td_text_with_title][td_text_with_title custom_title=”Keep An Eye On”]25TH ANNUAL COPE DAY AT THE RACES
