PROTECT HOUSING EMPLOYEES
A. 4999A Lentol/S. 3965A Lanza
The New York State AFL-CIO, representing 2.5 million union workers and their families as well as our retirees and their families, supports the above-referenced legislation.
This bill amends the Penal Law to include assault on New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) workers as a class D felony. This provision already applies to sanitation, transit and law enforcement workers as well as nurses, EMTs and other occupations.
The intent of the current law is to deter violence against workers, particularly those providing public services. Workers at NYCHA were excluded from this important protection despite the fact that they are exposed to the exact situations that other covered personnel experience.
The risk of assault or other violent situations should be no less important because of a worker’s title or pay grade and as such, NYCHA workers should be afforded the same protection as other titles in similar situations. This bill will have the effect of deterring violence, lowering workers’ compensation costs for NYCHA and most importantly, protecting employees’ from harm.
Therefore, this Federation urges this bill be passed.
