A. 2924A Wright /S. 4654A Golden
The New York State AFL-CIO, representing 2.5 million union workers and their families as well as our retirees and their families, supports the above-referenced legislation.
This bill amends the Public Authorities Law to create the New York City Transit Authority Safety Advisory Council, to require adequate staffing in various transit operations and to require a thorough analysis of safety issues related to the transit system.
This legislation creates a comprehensive and common sense approach to reviewing safety in the subways and mass transit system of New York City. Unfortunately, acts of violence against the public and the workforce have occurred over the years; this bill will be a large step in preventing future violence. More importantly, given the threat of terrorism in the modern era, it is critical that every step be taken to deter and prevent future attacks.
The subway and mass transit system of New York is the backbone of the economy and its safety and reliability must be protected. While the need to ensure the safety of citizens and workforce that use and maintain the operations of the mass transit system is self-evident, this bill is also critical to protect commerce, and the health and safety of all New Yorkers.
Therefore, this Federation urges this bill be passed.
