The New York State AFL-CIO, representing 2.5 million union workers and their families as well as our retirees and their families supports the above-referenced legislation.
This legislation will strengthen pay equality provisions by closing loopholes, protecting employees that discuss and inquire about wage rates of coworkers and expanding relief available to victimized employees. In cases involving willful violations of pay equity provisions, this bill would provide victims with treble damages.
While current law nominally prohibits wage disparity based on sex, it simply does not go far enough. On average, women in New York State earn 84 cents for every dollar that men earn. It is shameful that this disparity is permitted to continue in New York State. The time to fix this inequity is now.
This bill includes worker protections that the Labor Movement in this state has fought for decades to achieve. While there is more work to do, this legislation represents a monumental step toward achieving women’s equality in the workplace.
Therefore, this Federation urges this bill be passed.
