STOP SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN ALL WORKPLACES
S. Valesky/ A. 5360 Galef
The New York State AFL-CIO, representing 2.5 million union workers and their families as well as our retirees and their families, supports the above-referenced legislation.
This legislation will expand the prohibition against sexual harassment by covering all employers within the state. The current law prohibiting sexual harassment in the workplace only applies to employers with four or more employees. This loophole captures approximately sixty percent of all private employers in the state. Expanding protections from sexual harassment to all workplaces is common sense.
Workplace sexual harassment disproportionately impacts women. Women file over three-quarters of all sexual harassment complaints. This legislation will protect women in the workplace, no matter the size of their employer.
While there is more work to do, this legislation represents an important step toward achieving women’s equality in the workplace.
Therefore, this Federation urges this bill be passed.
