ON SENATE CIVIL SERVICE AND PENSIONS COMMITTEE 2/6/17
PENSION FAIRNESS FOR CORRECTION OFFICERS
The New York State AFL-CIO, representing 2.5 million union workers and their families as well as our retirees and their families supports the above-referenced legislation.
This bill would allow counties the option of providing a 20-year retirement at 1/2 pay to correction officers. Counties could also elect to provide an additional benefit of one sixtieth of final average salary for each year of service in excess of 20 years, not to exceed 15 additional years.
Current law allows counties the option to provide a 20-year retirement plan for sheriffs and other law enforcement personnel. Correction officers regularly come into contact with inmates and face many of the same dangers that other law enforcement personnel face. The constant risk of injury and the stress of working in a grueling atmosphere should warrant corrections officers the ability to receive the same retirement benefits as other law enforcement.
This Federation urges this bill be passed.
