PROTECT VITAL PAROLE SERVICES
S5987 Gallivan/ A7687 Weprin
The New York State AFL‐CIO, representing over 2.5 million union members, their families as well as our retirees and their families supports the above referenced legislation.
This bill would require the Commissioner of the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) to produce a comprehensive study focused on parole services and parole officers. The report would review staffing and caseloads of parole officers and support staff as well as review national standards and best practices.
Parole is a vital part of the criminal justice system but often entails dangerous work. Adequate resources, including staffing, support staff, and equipment are vital to ensure the safety of parole officers and the effectiveness of parole services for post incarcerated individuals readjusting to society. Unfortunately, ongoing budget caps and agency mergers have deteriorated the resources available for parole.
This study and report will provide a critical assessment of services, staffing and related issues to protect the staff, minimize workplace injuries and worker’s compensation costs and most importantly protect public safety.
This Federation urges this bill be passed.
