Legislative Alert: January 24, 2025
President's Message
FAIR AND SUSTAINABLE REVENUE
The NYS AFL-CIO and its affiliates strongly support reworking the state’s tax system to ensure state government can do what is necessary for a thriving New York. We have had years of record corporate profits, but a widening income inequality gap is creating unsustainable affordability issues for working families.
There are severe staffing shortages in health care, education, law enforcement, and many other vital services, and we are not adequately upgrading our infrastructure. Too many working families are barely making ends meet. We need to address all of this while preparing for the very likely scenario that federal budget cuts will further deteriorate public services.
We support the "Share Our Wealth" proposal, which will increase New York’s top tax rates for those earning over $5 million and over $25 million by 0.5%. The proposal will also increase the corporate tax rate by 1.75%. Both proposals were in the legislative one-house budget proposals last year and are entirely reasonable.
We must address the affordability issues that all working families in the state face, and this bill would be an important step forward by raising up to $3 billion that could be invested in childcare, education, healthcare, transportation, and housing, and other critical needs.
