Register to Vote in New York State

New Yorkers can register to vote online, in-person or by mail. The qualifications to register are as follows:

  • You must be a United States Citizen
  • You must be 18 years old (you may pre-register at 16 or 17 but cannot vote until you are 18)
  • You must be a resident of this state and the county, city or village for at least 30 days before the election
  • You cannot be in prison for a felony conviction
  • You cannot be not be adjudged mentally incompetent by a court
  • You cannot claim the right to vote elsewhere

Register to Vote Online

You can register online through the New York State Board of Elections website. This tool can also be used to update your voter registation information such as your name, address, or party enrollment.

Online voter registration is also available through the Department of Motor Vehicles website for those who have DMV-issued identification.

Completed voter registration forms may be submitted in-person or by mail as directed in the sections below. You may fill out the form electronically, but you must sign it by hand. Electronic signatures will not be accepted. Use these links to download the form in multiple languages:

Submit Voter Registration Form In-Person

You may submit your completed voter registrations form in-person at your county board of elections, at any New York State agency-based voter registration center, or at any Department of Motor Vehicles office.

Submit Voter Registration Form by Mail

Completed voter registration forms can be mailed to your county board of elections.

You can request that a voter registration form be sent to you by mail through this request page, or by calling the Board of Elections hotline at 1-800-FOR-VOTE (1-800-367-8683).

Make Changes to Your Voter Registration

The online voter registration tools and forms above can be used to update your name and/or address. Updates must be received by your county board of elections at least 15 days before an election. 

You can also update your party enrollment using the online voter registration tools and voter registration forms. The Board of Elections must receive the update by February 14th for you to be elligible to vote in the primary election that year.
