SUPPORT MEMO: PREVENT WORKPLACE VIOLENCE IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS

S1720 Ramos

The New York State AFL-CIO, representing 2.5 million union workers and their families, as well as our retirees and their families, supports the above-referenced legislation.

This legislation amends the Labor Law to require school districts to develop and implement workplace violence prevention programs. Current law requires all public employers to develop such programs, but school districts are excluded. This bill would require schools to do the same assessment of the workplace and develop a strategy to correct any areas of potential violence.

Recent tragedies including school violence necessitate initial and ongoing assessments for schools to protect the safety of students and personnel. This bill would simply hold school districts to the same high standard of workplace violence prevention as other public employers.

Therefore, this Federation urges this bill be passed.
