Rev. Terrence Melvin was re-elected unanimously by the delegates of the 33rd Constitutional Convention of the New York State AFL-CIO to a four year term as Secretary-Treasurer. The election took place today at the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel in New York City.
The office of the Secretary-Treasurer has spent the past 4 years focusing on modernizing the organization as well as investing in community and non-labor allies. The goal of Rev. Melvin has been to keep the organization current institutionally as well as in the lives and homes of the members. This has meant investing in new technologies and systems for the operations of the organization while also investing in the communities and non-labor organizations union members are part of. Under his leadership the NYS AFL-CIO has expanded constituency groups, religious partnerships, and community allies. In his speech Rev. Melvin stated "In the last four years we have expanded and strengthen our relationship with community groups. Our fight became theirs and theirs ours. That means we have more troops in battle and all our members have a voice in change, both on the job and in their community."
