Did you know that the folkswho work onelevators in NYS don't have to be licensed or properly-trained? If you think that is wrong, you're not alone. Today National Elevator Industry Educational Program instructors came to Albany to educate legislators and the general public on the ways properly-trained elevator workers keep you safe. Albany - Every day on average, 13 workers die in this country as a result of workplace injuries. And, every year in cities, towns and communities across America we gather on Workers' Memorial Day to remember our brothers and sisters who have lost their lives on the job. The Labor Movement is the single most important entity toward ensuring a better life for working men and women. We fight for better wages and benefits, but we also fight for better conditions of employment which results in safer working conditions.
On April 28, the unions of the AFL-CIO observe Workers Memorial Day to remember those who have suffered and died on the job and to renew the fight for safe jobs. This year we will come together to call for work in this country that is safe and healthy and pays fair wages. We will celebrate the victories won by working people and commit to fighting until all workers have safe jobs and the freedom to form unions without the threat of retaliation.

Manhattan, NY - Federal, State and City leaders joined labor, environmental, progressive and consumer groups today, Thursday, April 7, 2016, on the steps of City Hall to show their unified opposition to the massive Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and to urge all members of Congress to defeat the proposed trade agreement if it comes to a vote.
More and more Republicans are starting to cave into pressure from working people like you to do their job and hold a hearing and vote on Pres. Obama's Supreme Court nominee, Judge Merrick Garland. But we need to keep the pressure up because Mitch McConnell and Republican leaders are hoping they can ride out the coming weeks into the summer recess and avoid doing their constitutional duty.
UPDATE: BIG VICTORY FOR WORKING PEOPLE! Click here to read press release.   Posted: Feb 10, 2016 - We're working to pass a $15 minimum wage in the State Legislature by March 31 - for all workers. Under the proposal, 3,000,000 workers would see their wages rise. That's 37% of the workforce!

In New York State we have an opportunity to create good paying jobs while keeping our tax dollars right here at home. It's quite simple - Buy American. A proposal before the state legislature would establish a preference for the use and purchase of American-made steel and iron products in structural and component parts of public works projects.
*UPDATE: BIG WIN FOR WORKING PEOPLE! Click here to read statement. Poll after poll shows widespread public support for a paid family leave insurance program. The Governor has proposed a plan that the NYS AFL-CIO supports, the Assembly has passed the NYS AFL-CIO's program bill and the Senate has included paid family leave in their one-house budget proposal. Now it's time to finish the job.
