Statement of New York State AFL-CIO President Mario Cilento on proposal to make college tuition-free for middle-class families

“Making college tuition-free for middle-class families is smart public policy and an investment in our future that is long overdue,” said Mario Cilento, President of the New York State AFL-CIO. “We commend Governor Cuomo for once again taking the lead in recognizing the value of higher education and setting a standard for the rest of the country to follow. “We are proud of our union brothers and sisters who have dedicated their careers to providing top-notch quality education. This initiative will allow more New Yorkers to take advantage of our excellent SUNY and CUNY colleges without the burden of student debt. “We look forward to working with the Governor and Legislature to make college affordable to as many New Yorkers as possible.”
